Where a smart thermostat helps
- Schedules that change from day to day.
- Control from your phone when you are away.
- Reminders for filters and service.
- Clear readouts of what the system is doing.
Where it doesn't
- Rooms that are always too hot or cold. That is usually a duct, airflow or insulation problem.
- Systems that are the wrong size.
- Savings you were expecting from a thermostat alone.
Heat pump tips
Heat pumps work best with steady settings. Big overnight setbacks can make some systems use backup heat to catch up, which costs more. Ask your installer how yours is set up.
When zoning helps
Zoning splits a house into areas with separate control, using dampers in the ducts or separate ductless units. It helps with two story homes, rooms with lots of glass, additions and rooms used at different times. It has to be designed into the system, and it is easiest to do during an install.
Compatibility
Not every thermostat works with every system. Heat pumps, multistage equipment and some ductless units have specific requirements. Ask before you buy.
Rooms never comfortable?
A duct and airflow check often does more than a new thermostat. Call for an inspection.
