What the words on your quote mean.
Quotes and inspection reports use a lot of shorthand. These are the terms we see most.
- Air handler
- The indoor unit of a ducted system. It holds the blower and coil and moves air through the ducts.
- CSIA
- Chimney Safety Institute of America. A CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep has passed its exam.
- Condensate drain
- The small pipe that carries water away from the indoor coil. A clog can leak or shut the system off.
- Direct vent
- A sealed fireplace that brings in combustion air and sends out exhaust through one vent, without using room air.
- Flue
- The passage that carries smoke or exhaust from a fireplace out of the house.
- HERS / energy code verification
- Independent testing, such as duct leakage tests, that California requires on most system replacements.
- HEPA
- A filter type that captures very small particles. Mostly used in portable units or dedicated in duct setups.
- Heat pump
- A system that heats and cools by moving heat, instead of burning fuel to make it.
- Insert
- A gas or wood burning unit that fits into an existing masonry fireplace.
- Level 1, Level 2 inspection
- Levels of chimney inspection. Level 1 is a visual and safety check. Level 2 adds a camera scan of the flue.
- Line set
- The pair of refrigerant lines that connect the outdoor unit to the indoor unit.
- Linear fireplace
- A wide, low gas fireplace with a long flame.
- Liner
- A metal or masonry lining inside a chimney flue that makes it safe for the appliance.
- Load calculation
- The calculation that sizes a system to the house, using its walls, windows, insulation and climate.
- MERV
- A rating of how well a filter captures particles. MERV 13 or higher is the level the EPA recommends for wildfire smoke.
- Mini split
- A ductless heat pump or air conditioner with a slim indoor unit on the wall or ceiling.
- NATE
- North American Technician Excellence, a certification for HVAC technicians.
- NFPA 211
- The fire safety standard for chimneys, fireplaces and vents. It recommends annual inspections.
- Slot diffuser
- A long, narrow ceiling or wall opening where air enters the room, instead of a grille.
- Supply and return
- Supply ducts bring conditioned air to rooms. Return ducts bring room air back to the air handler.
- Thermocouple
- A safety sensor in many gas fireplaces and heaters that confirms the pilot is lit.
- Zoning
- Dividing a house into areas with separate temperature control.
