After the install

What to expect from a new system, and how to look after it.

Look after a new system from day one. This page covers the first week and what keeps it running for years.

Fireplace

Looking after a fireplace.

  • First burns

A new gas fireplace can give off a faint odor and a light film on the glass during its first hours as paints and oils cure. Open a window, run it for a few hours and the smell fades. Don't touch the glass; it gets very hot.

  • Keep the glass closed

Gas fireplaces are designed to burn with the glass front in place. Never run one with the glass removed, and keep anything combustible clear of the front and above it.

  • Use the remote

Keep the remote batteries fresh. If the fireplace stops responding, replace the batteries first, then check the wall switch.

  • Yearly check

Book an annual safety check for any fireplace: burner, ignition, glass seal, vent, plus gas and CO testing.

  • Wood fireplaces

Burn only dry, seasoned hardwood, never trash or treated wood, and keep the damper open until the fire is out. Have the chimney inspected and swept at least once a year.

Heating and air

Keeping the system running.

  • The first week

Expect a few cycles while the system settles. Set the thermostat and leave it. Changing it back and forth doesn't heat or cool the house any faster.

  • Change the filter

Check it after the first month, then every one to three months. We show you where it is and which size to buy at the handover; call if you've forgotten.

  • Keep the outdoor unit clear

Leave two feet of clearance around the outdoor unit, rake leaves away, and aim sprinklers off it.

  • Watch the drain

If you see water around the indoor unit, switch the system off and call us.

  • Yearly tune up

A tune up each year protects the equipment and often the warranty. Check your warranty terms, because some require proof of maintenance.

  • Register the warranty

Register new equipment with the manufacturer if your warranty requires it, and keep the paperwork where you can find it.

Something not right?

Call (805) 699-1112. A tune up or a diagnostic is the easiest way to catch problems early. See the maintenance calendar and before you call checks.
